After twenty years as an Army MP, Valentino was unsure of the next steps in his journey and where his career path might lead him. There were not many options available in computer technology, his initial interest, or at the aviation school where he was based. After contacting the Disabled American Veterans organization, he was connected with PRIDE Industries about potential job opportunities.
Valentino would have never guessed that locksmithing would be his calling, but his skills and willingness to learn have allowed him to thrive and become a leader in his new field. After shadowing his peers, he dedicated himself to the coursework necessary to become an expert locksmith. He has been recognized as Employee of the Month, but ultimately is most excited when he sees the appreciation of the people he helps.
“Patience is needed in locksmithing,” Valentino notes. “Things don't always work on the first try, and some locks must be worked on repeatedly. I’ve never failed at anything in life, so I won’t let a lock get me down. When you work at a job you love, time flies.”
Valentino's experience at PRIDE Industries has been enriched by the supportive environment. Working at a military installation alongside personnel with similar backgrounds has been a bonus. He appreciates the willingness of everyone he interacts with to share their knowledge in a variety of fields. This supportive atmosphere has not only enhanced his locksmithing skills but also allowed him to gain expertise in carpentry, electrical maintenance, HVAC, and other areas, benefiting him in his personal life.
Eight years into his new career, Valentino - with the support of his managers and colleagues - plans to continue building his skills and eventually start his own business as an automotive locksmith.
For others in a similar situation looking to start a new career, his advice is simple: “Never give up. In my situation, I’ve searched and applied for many jobs. Even if you get a job, it may not be the one you want, but it will allow you to continue the search for something that will fit your lifestyle and help you support your family. You may not get selected for 95% of the jobs you apply for, but eventually, it will come through.”
